Floyd County
Floyd County was founded by Colonel John Floyd (1750- 1783) and became the 40th county of 120 in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It is 396 square miles located in the heart of eastern Kentucky, has a population of about 39,000 and was once dependent on a thriving coal mining economy. Floyd County is situated on the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River and is on the Country Music Highway, a National Scenic Byway and has produced numerous musical talents. The county seat is Prestonsburg and Jenny Wiley State Resort Park proudly calls it home. Floyd County has a rich history, culture and people. It was used as a Confederate stronghold during the Civil War but gave way to two Union victories at the Middle Creek National Battlefield and Battle of Ivy Mountain. Indulge in a round of golf or several at StoneCrest (18-hole) and Beaver Valley (9-hole) Golf Courses. Take in a show year ‘round at the Mountain Arts Center and Jenny Wiley Theatre. Explore the area with visits to the Samuel May House (built in 1817), Wayland Museum, and the East Kentucky Science Center.
